CoSA VFX Celebrates National Comic Book Day

Comic books as we know them have existed for over a hundred years, with the medium exploding in the late 1930’s as new characters such as Batman and Superman were introduced. As the medium evolved, stories became more daring, and today we live in a world where these enduring characters are front and center in many film and television productions.

CoSA VFX has been involved in bringing many iconic images from comic books to the screen. We defined the look of Arkham Asylum for FOX’s Gotham, showing off the gates of the infamous facility where Batman’s worst villains like Mister Freeze were jailed. Gotham City itself was a major “character” in the series, with CoSA’s teams also creating a unique skyline and look for the city. We were even able to introduce the “Caped Crusader” himself to the series with the final shot of the show featuring Batman.

Another milestone project for CoSA in recent years was DC’s Swamp Thing produced by visionary director James Wan. In addition to accentuating the main character, we also were also able to help build the world around him; from expansive swamps to animated living vines creating many cinematic and suspenseful moments on television!

Over on the Marvel front, we were involved with bringing Robbie Reyes, the Ghost Rider and his fiery chain, to television screens during Season 5 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Speaking of fire, we also defined the look of Daimon Helstrom’s “hellfire” effects for Marvel’s Helstrom series on Hulu..

Did you know that Syfy’s Resident Alien was based on a comic book? It was, and it was such a fantastic experience bringing this show and its hilarious out of this world antics to life.

Of course, we can never forget about Lucifer. While the series sometimes diverged from its comic book inspiration, there were times when we almost entirely went from page to screen – case in point: the look of Maze for the Season 3 episode “Once Upon A Time.” And of course, any fan of Lucifer knows we’ve handled all sorts of things, from devil faces to angel wings on this fan-favorite show.

These simply scratch the surface. From creating the green-hued magnetic powers of popular X-Men character Lorna Dane/Polaris for The Gifted and conjuring dark magic with Nico Minoru on Marvel’s Runaways, CoSA VFX has been there for so many comic book-inspired milestones on television. With National Comic Book Day happening tomorrow, September 25, we’re revisiting some of our favorite shots that we have had the privilege of being a part of and we look forward to creating many more in the years to come.
