Artist Spotlight: Jeannie Ben-Hain

Today the Artist Spotlight shines on Jeannie Ben-Hain, our talented senior compositor who is currently acting as CoSA’s Lead Compositor for the EPIX series Pennyworth.

Many of Jeannie’s favorite shots that she has worked on here happen to involve comic book-inspired projects, and whether it was Marvel’s Ghost Rider coming through a portal on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a house explosion and roof collapse on Pennyworth, or a devil head sticking out his tongue on Lucifer, Jeannie always delivered. Lucifer has been a specific favorite of hers to work on, with the added bonus that her dad was a fan of the show, bringing more pleasure when she could share her work with him once the episodes would drop on Netflix.

“I’ve probably spent the most time working on Lucifer,” Jeannie reflects, grateful that the series offered opportunities to work on many kinds of shots. The variety allows Ben-Hain to work on “a little bit of everything,” from complex CG integration to tricky paint removals, creating CG fire, working with green screens, face replacements, removing reflections, and more. Having been at CoSA for four years, Jeannie sees her specialty at the company as being her versatility, and she enjoys any opportunities where she can show off the variety of tasks that she can tackle. Jeannie is also known for thinking on the fly and having great problem solving skills, always figuring out ways to make things work and developing workarounds when needed.

“I love working with the team here at CoSA, because it really does feel like a team,” Jeannie enthuses. “I’ve worked at other jobs where you can often feel like just another cog in the wheel – churning out shots. Here, I feel like we’re all working together to achieve our best work.” She also appreciates that the CoSA partners all have backgrounds as VFX artists, which gives them a unique sensibility and a great technical understanding of best practices and practical timeframes on how to achieve success.

Nick Lund-Ulrich has been Jeannie’s supervisor for both seasons of Pennyworth and has nothing but positive words to say about her and her work. “Her attention to detail, positive attitude, problem solving, and straight up skill level made her an invaluable part of the team! She was instrumental in setting key looks throughout both seasons.”

Fun trivia about Jeannie: Before ultimately transitioning into film and visual effects, Jeannie worked for a short time as a safety engineer for General Motors, where she got to watch crash tests!
