Ryan Murphy’s highly anticipated musical comedy film, The Prom, arrives on Netflix this Friday, based on the Broadway musical of the same name. The film stars Nicole Kidman, James Corden, Keegan-Michael Key, Kerry Washington, and Meryl Streep with Jo Ellen Pellman. CoSA VFX had the privilege of working with Ryan Murphy Productions in providing the visual effects for pivotal key sequences on the film.
“A true Broadway experience” was a goal of the film, and authentically recreating that New York look was something very important to both Ryan Murphy and producer Alexis Martin Woodall. In some situations where this was not physically possible in Los Angeles, the expertise of visual effects companies like ours was brought in to perfect that look.
The difference of creating visual effects for television and films has diminished in the streaming era, and CoSA VFX is fortunate enough to have experience with both. Things have been taken to a level where there is no longer a big difference in which medium one is creating visual effects for. It was CoSA’s goal as a company to deliver sophisticated, high-quality work that Netflix and Ryan Murphy are known for.
“Ryan Murphy is a creative powerhouse,” CoSA VFX Supervisor and co-founder Tom Mahoney said about what it was like to work for the prolific producer-director. “We certainly wanted to do the best work we could because Ryan and all of the people involved with the project have a great eye for detail.”
In addition to the opportunity of working with Ryan Murphy, working on The Prom was a privilege for CoSA VFX because of the strong social messages in the film. These are stories of dreams, of courage, and of acceptance. It is a story of inclusion and unity with a stellar cast, and in a year where people are so split apart both ideologically and physically, this kind of inspiration is extremely important. It’s like a Broadway show experience on the screen, with a story that all viewers could identify with. The film drops on Netflix Friday, December 11.
