CoSA VFX Returns To The Crime Lab With CSI: Vegas

The legendary CSI franchise returns this Wednesday, October 6 by going back to the city where the franchise started: Las Vegas. CSI: Vegas brings back iconic actors from the original series including William Petersen and Jorja Fox for a new story involving the next generation of the Las Vegas crime scene investigation lab. CoSA VFX is thrilled to be a part of the team, redefining the look of the series as the main VFX vendor for the show.

In anticipation of the exciting season premiere, we spoke with members of the CoSA team about their enthusiasm for the new series.

“I’ve been a fan from the get go, so I was very excited to be a part of this project,” CoSA VFX Producer Karina Slater says, adding that the series offers great opportunities for our studio, as visual effects can enhance what the audience sees when the CSI team investigates.

VFX Supervisor and CoSA co-founder Christopher Lance recalls the studio’s work on the later seasons of the original series and the finale movie, comparing the show to “an old friend.”

“It feels great,” he says. “It’s like getting back together. It’s the same world, and they’re doing shots that seem similar, but at the same time, they’re going for new looks based on forensic techniques that have come out in the last decade. It’s exciting to be back with the show and family of characters that we love, but doing new things and improving upon the work that we did in the last few seasons of the original series.”

Returning to CSI allowed the team to, once again, work with Brad Tanenbaum and Phil Conserva who remain an integral part of the show’s creative process. There is a strong desire for accuracy on the series, with the production and our CoSA team having access to real-life software creators and operators as well as an on-set forensic analyst!

For VFX Supervisor John Cherniack, CSI: Vegas gives CoSA an opportunity to work with a well known show with a great fan base and a franchise that has been known and loved for decades while updating it to show off new advancements in crime scene investigation technology and techniques. “Forensics technology has advanced so much over the last 10 years,” he says. “We get to help contribute to the story by highlighting the most current techniques, technology, and machinery to solve murders using a variety of different visual effects.”

A trailer for CSI: Vegas can be seen below. Be sure to check out the season premiere Wednesday, October 6 at 10PM ET/PT on CBS. Then watch out for some some behind-the-scenes insights from our VFX team later!
